If you have lips that are always dry and chapped, you understand a struggle that some others may not and this can be a huge source of insecurity.
Having a chapped lip was something I struggled with for the longest time. I used all sorts of lip products from different brands that promise to be moisturizing.
Like some people, I formed the bad habit of peeling my lips from time to time to remove the dry skin on the surface but it would end up making my lips look red and bruised.
A lot of the things I applied would just sit on top of my lips and when it got cleaned off probably after a meal or a long day, my lips were just as dry again.
Sometimes I had to lick my lips continuously if I didn’t have a balm close by and it made my lips drier and whitish and as someone who would like to look put together, it is the last thing you want.
This struggle continued until I one day stumbled on a solution accidentally.
How I cured my chapped lip
One night after taking a shower before preparing for bed, I noticed that my lips were hydrated from the water in the shower and it had a slight whitish look. Nothing gross but it didn’t look smooth and subtle as it should.
Which made sense because the dry lip was a layer of dead cells just sitting on my lip.
Now a lot of people get chapped lips because they are dehydrated, but that wasn’t me, I drank bottles and bottles of water a day and medical checks showed there was nothing wrong with me internally.
So, I took a clean piece of face towel and scrubbed gently on my lips and all the white dead cells scurried off to reveal smooth skin underneath.
I was amazed!
I then followed up with some Carmex and went to bed.
Lo and behold, it was like I was given a new set of lips. And what was even more unbelievable was that my lips remained soft and supple the entire day.
Now I have tried some lip scrubs in the past and they didn’t seem to work for me. Only seemed to make it worse dare I say. I think it is probably because the scrubs exfoliate a bit too much of the lips and so the lip tries to heal itself again making it dry faster with another layer of dead skin at the top.
Now that I healed my lips I’m able to use some lip scrub from time to time. My favorites are the Handmade Heroes 100% Natural Lip Scrub and the e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator. I only use them once or twice a week to help brighten my lips.
These simple tips are what I still use as of writing this post and my lips have remained smooth and supple.
My current routine
What I do now is that I got like two sets of face towels and cut them up into smaller sizes that way I don’t have to worry about having a fresh one to use whenever I am done taking a shower. I just put it in the washer afterward.
Also, another lip product that I alternate with Carmex is the Aquaphor lip repair or the Aquaphor healing ointment. I only use ointment at night as it is quite heavy.
Now for the scrubs, I have also found that using coffee grounds instead of sugar is milder and does a better job but nothing replaces the gentle exfoliation with a towel immediately after taking a shower.
This is important because your lip soaks up so much water when you take a shower and you can visibly see the dead layer on your lip. It easily comes off when you scrub your lips a couple of times with the towel.
Conclusion
If you struggle with a chapped lip, I strongly recommend you try this, it might work for you, and might be the game changer for something you have been struggling so much with like it did for me.
Just get some Carmex or Aquaphor and some fresh towels on your way home today I am sure you will see significant improvement later and you will be glad you stumbled on this post.
